Research Scientist

Internal auditor for ISO 9002

Teer Coatings Ltd. is a specialist PVD company divided into three separate departments; commercial coating services, research and development and manufacture of PVD and PECVD coating and testing equipment. I have two roles within the company. My primary role within the research and development department is to lead projects for the development of cutting edge PVD and PECVD coatings and equipment. I have personally developed a new world leading carbon based solid lubricant coating capable of sustaining contact pressures greater than 3GPa. This coating has proved to be particularly successful in the tin, Sn forming industry and demand in other areas is expanding exponentially. I am also the company representative in a pan-european consortium formed to develop innovative coatings using electron beam ablation for temperature sensitive medical implants.

My secondary role is as an internal auditor for ISO 9002. I audit the company quality procedures to ensure we provide a consistently superior product.

Skills learnt: · Vast knowledge of plasma engineering and the manipulation of component surfaces to improve product performance and lifetime.· Ability to organise the energies and talents of myself and others to work towards a shared purpose in the best interests of the company and the people it serves.· Ability to delegate and interact with others to advance the work of the company in ways that develop respect, mutual understanding and productive working relationships.

1994-1998 Surface Engineering Department, Materials Research Institute, University of Sheffield Hallam, Sheffield.

Research and production assistant.

The department I was employed in operates as a separate company from the rest of the university in conjunction with BodyCote a leading international coating supplier. My duties involved the production and characterisation of PVD coatings.

Skills learnt:· Extensive experience of surface engineering and materials assessment in an industrial environment. · Capacity to work collaboratively as a member of a project based team to strict deadlines.· Ability to explain technical subjects to people of all levels and abilities.

Research assistant.

During my employment with Courtaulds Textiles I worked as part of a team to develop a low friction glass fibre composite capable of operating effectively at high temperatures. The experience of being employed within such an organisation gave me an insight into the operations of a large-scale modern corporation.

In addition to the aforementioned positions I have also been employed in a part timecapacity by a variety of retail companies. These periods of employment have given me experience of customer relations and the importance of being able to function withina team environment.
